What is Archie, and what does it do?

Archie became the first search tool in the world when it was needed to access data on distributed computers. FTP was used by American universities in the 1980s to connect computer systems. The users relied on word of mouth for finding what they were looking for. Alan Emtage and Peter Deutsch decided to create a database that could be searched for all files on the computers.

Emtage, Heelan, and Deutsch wrote this search script at McGill University Montreal Canada in September 1990. It was released in the form of a program that downloaded directory listings from public anonymous FTP sites, enabling the creation of a database of file names that could be searched.

The name Archie comes from the word "archive" but is not related to a popular comic character. This name is associated with comics despite this.

The archie network is a collection of servers that hold the data collected from all searches on archie. These servers are situated in different parts of the world.

These servers process 50,000 queries a day from a few thousand users worldwide and are based on a global collection of archie server replicas that replicate an ever-evolving 150 MB database of 2.1 million records. These servers can answer queries in seconds during the weekend, but can take from five minutes to several hour to answer simple questions on weekday afternoons.

What is an archie FTP search?

An archie ftp query is a search done online that uses a FTPS (File Transfer Protocol), client, to send requests. The server will return to the client the matching file or directory. The client then performs a file search on the returned result to see if it matches the requested file or directory.

When a search is completed, the filename or directory is added to the archie database and a search result is output. The result contains the filename, the matched file, and a link to its FTP site. You can use the result as a base for other searches.
